The Glamorous World of American Cabaret

Table of Contents

When people think of belly dancers in North America, they often picture flowing veils, zills (finger cymbals) ringing, and dancers lighting up the stage in crystal-bedazzled costumes.

This theatrical style is known as American Cabaret Belly Dance, or “AmCab” for short. It has a history of traditional movements and fusion, making it a style all its own.

As I am a theatre girl at heart and a huge fan of Old Hollywood Glam, I am very excited to dive into this style with you!

What Is American Cabaret Belly Dance?

American Cabaret Belly Dance is a fusion style that developed in the United States during the mid-20th century. Influenced by traditional Middle Eastern, Turkish, and Egyptian dance styles, AmCab was shaped by the nightclub scene of the 1950s through the 1970s, especially in cities like New York and Los Angeles.

Unlike folkloric or classical styles that stick to specific cultural or regional traditions, American Cabaret is theatrical, eclectic, and designed for entertainment.

It evolved in nightclubs and supper clubs, often where live musicians and dancers performed for diverse audiences and later in larger theatrical stage settings.

It is known for its dramatic flair, variety of props, and a structured but flexible performance set designed to wow the crowd.

The American Cabaret Set Structure

One of the defining features of AmCab is its classic set structure, often performed with live musicians:

  1. Entrance – A dynamic, upbeat song to introduce the dancer and captivate the audience.
  2. Veil Work – Flowing, elegant movements using a silk veil to add grace and visual impact.
  3. Finger Cymbals (Zills) – Dancers play finger cymbals while dancing to share their musicality and skill.
  4. Slow & Floorwork Section – A lyrical segment that may include floorwork (when culturally appropriate and safe). Dancers might also use swords or other props.
  5. Drum Solo – A sharp, exciting section with isolations and accents matching the beat of the darbuka (drum).
  6. Finale – A joyful, energetic finish that often invites audience applause and/or participation.

This performance flow makes AmCab engaging and accessible to both Middle Eastern and Western audiences, and allows the dancer to showcase a wide range of skills.

Costuming: Glitz and Glamour

American Cabaret costumes are known for their sparkle, and showbiz sensibility. Think:

  • Beaded bra and belt sets
  • Flowing chiffon skirts
  • Coin-decorated hip scarves
  • Rhinestones, sequins, and metallics
  • Glamorous makeup and hair
  • Exciting props like fans, veils, wings and swords

Unlike more folkloric or minimalistic styles, AmCab embraces maximum visual impact. This style celebrates feminine elegance and drama, echoing the golden age of showgirls and cabaret entertainers.

Props and Playfulness

AmCab dancers often incorporate a variety of props, depending on the dancer’s skills and the venue:

  • Zills (finger cymbals)
  • Veils
  • Canes (Assaya) – especially for a Saidi segment
  • Sword balancing
  • Tambourines
  • Candle trays
  • Fan Veils
  • Feather Fans
  • Isis Wings

The style allows for creativity, storytelling, and engaging with the audience. A good American Cabaret dancer is technically skilled and, perhaps more importantly, a charismatic performer.

Music: A Cultural Mosaic

AmCab is often performed to a mix of Arabic, Turkish, Greek, and Armenian music, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of musicians in mid-century American nightclubs. The music is high-energy and emotionally expressive, offering dancers plenty of opportunities to play with rhythm and melody.

Why Dancers Love American Cabaret

For many dancers, American Cabaret is a joyful celebration of freedom, femininity, and flair. It allows performers to:

  • Explore musicality with live instruments
  • Engage the audience with a theatrical presence
  • Blend traditional technique with personal expression
  • Play with costumes and props in creative ways

It’s a style that encourages dancers to sparkle and shimmy their way into the spotlight, honouring the roots of belly dance while making it their own.
